Sunday's Gifts.

Just when you think no one's reading your book much anymore, a Google Alert (do you use this?) comes through with this review of Famous Fathers that makes me grateful - relieved - to be a writer with a blogger/reader named Moonlight Ambulette.

To return the gift, be lifted by Saint Paul Sunday - clarinetist, Anthony Gill, and pianist, Natalie Zhu, playing Poulenc and Brahms. (sigh.)

Resonance.

This is a fine looking publication you can read on line. Matthew Simmons posted a review of Famous Fathers. Thank you, Matthew, for saying it like you said it.

I brought you to my page, but you can flip through the issue via PDF. Lots of writing to enjoy and the art direction's beautiful.

Someone's Epinion.

This is what whyterabbit79 thinks about my short story collection.*

Okay.

But why didn't she throw the book across the room before she finished it? If I felt this way about what I was reading, I'd probably change horses midstream. Life's short and there's so much good work to read. I mean, she works in a bookstore, you know?

*I happily post the good reviews in here, so it only seems fair to post the not-good ones too.

On the couch.

You've got to give this new show a try, because the cast kills (a pun!), it's smart, funny, sexy - kissing-through-saran-wrap-sexy - and the art direction's hugely beautiful.

Octavia Books.

I'm reading with one of my favorite people, Roy Kesey, on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books on Octavia Street, near Whole Foods on Magazine. It's a beautiful store and Roy's come all the way from Beijing, so I hope that even if you're tired of Famous Fathers and me, you'll come to hear my friend read.

In Rainbows.

Radiohead is letting you decide what to pay for their new CD In Rainbows.

"The majority of the public are really decent human beings who are honest." So says Chris Hufford, a manager of the group Radiohead, on its plans to let fans name their price for the digital download of its new album.

About Damn Time.

Jim Shepard recently received a long overdue nomination for the National Book Award for LIKE YOU'D UNDERSTAND, ANYWAY. Here, he's interviewed by my fellow Bread Loaf Fellow, Bret Anthony Johnston. Raised awareness of this book can only bring more sheep into his fold. He's a great writer and a good guy.

(Thanks to Linera Lucas for the link.)

Oxford American's Music Issue.

Buy it. Read it. Pop the CD into your CD player and listen. Scratch and sniff the perfume card. (Wait. There is no perfume card.) This issue's a sensory overload with pieces by my friends Jim Ruland and Jim Whorton, and my mentor, Frederick Barthelme. I've got a piece in there about moving with my family from Calgary, Alberta to Hattiesburg, Mississippi called "Classical Is A Period, Not An Adjective."

Here's the photo the newspaper took and ran of me and my sisters way back when.

Chicago.

How I love this city and its people. I'll be reading at Bookslut on Tuesday the 23rd with Eileen Miles and Matthew Eck. Come see me and us, please. It's not that far a drive, is it, if you leave now?

And where is Claire Zulkey lately?

Eddie.

We had to put our sweet chocolate Lab, Eddie, down this morning. He had a bad heart, and poor circulation was atrophying his back legs. He'd been going downhill, eating less if at all, moving less, barking at the garbage truck less, but we were hanging on. When Malcolm went to greet him and feed him this morning, he didn't get up, just lay on his stomach with his legs splayed, and looked at us with such sad, resigned eyes, which we took as a plea to help him out and let him go. He was almost 13. M and A and I took turns sitting with Eddie in the cool cellar where he sleeps, and at 11:00 a.m. we drove to the vet together. Andrew didn't want to watch him be put to sleep or euthanized, so he stood outside under the portico and watched the rain. The sun broke through the clouds around the time that Eddie went, which made A feel better, and us too. Like he died with grace. But now it's the end of the day, and there's still food in his bowl, fresh water, and no good dog to greet us when we walk in the front door.
