Toothpaste For Dinner.

Because you might've forgotten I told you about him. This is the kind of funny I'd like to be.

Order Up.

I know, I know. Those five or so of you who frequent my blog think I'm always trying to spend your money on literary magazines, but if you can, support them, please.

Quick Fiction 10, on the occasion of this mighty lit mag's 5th anniversary.

Opium 3's mind-popping new issue.

Hurry Up, October 30th.

If I had to, I'd Harry-Potter myself into line to get Mary Robison's next novel. Instead, it's pre-ordered, and I'm antsy and happy that she's about to put another book into the world.

My First Book.

Momentum's picking up re: the publication of FAMOUS FATHERS. I'm addressing thoughtful, considerate line edits by my editor, Karan Mahajan, and fixing three stories that needed more work. It's kind of lovely to go back and crack open pieces that I haven't touched in a few years, and change stuff based on what I know now. I've got a second chance to not leave plot lines hanging. Or strand my characters out there in isolation. Instead, I'm trying to steady their frightened hearts in time to catch the train home.

So, the Saints.

They're winning games, and not making dumb penalties, and keeping their heads in the game. Reggie's got a journal, and he's goodness, deflecting credit because what's going on here is that the Saints are strong all over. Like with seventh round pick, Marquis Colston, who reached for the TD, (his 4th this season), got up, put the ball down, and walked away.

It's so weird to kind of let your guard down about this team that's got a history of dropping hope-filled fans on their heads. It's something like maybe thinking about letting yourself love again.

Update.

The man in the driveway wasn't murdered. He's a local neurologist who jumped to his death because of, they say, recent money and marital problems.

My stepson's house is down, and his lot looks more narrow, deeper when it's empty.

The third woman died in the car crash. A mother and her two daughters, who'd driven over for the day from Mississippi.

Here's A Day.

Malcolm went to the office early this morning - 6 a.m. - to pick up papers he needed for a 9 a.m. meeting in Baton Rouge, and he saw a dead man who'd been stabbed in the driveway of the parking lot of our building. Not yet covered. When M came out of the building, he saw the bloodstain on the street. Nothing on the news tonight, but they don't report all of the murders and shootings that happen almost daily in the city.

The census released today shows that only 186,000 people are back and living in New Orleans, although the mayor's convinced that the number's off and that there are really 250,000, which would be half of the population before Katrina.

Today's the deadline to either gut your home and cut the grass, or have it torn down, so orange warnings are being stapled to people's front doors. My stepson's been waiting for two days to meet the demo guys at his Lakeview home so he can watch them knock down the first home he ever bought and crush and haul away the wedding gifts, the jazz fest posters, the baby shower gifts, the bright yellow walls he painted in Lucy's nursery.

A priest blessed kids' pets and stuffed animals today.

Two women were killed just a few hours ago in a car accident in Mandeville when a ladder fell off the back of a St. Bernard fireman's truck on Interstate 12. The man was salt of the earth, always so careful. A third woman is in critical condition. His truck was loaded with equipment to rebuild homes.

Million Dollar Pie.

If you like pecan pie, you're gonna love this delicious winner that needs a whole stick of butter.

(Oops! I've been crushing TWO granola bars, because I just noticed that I copied the recipe down wrong. You know what? My version's good, but probably only worth, like, $750,000.)

Narrative Prizes.

Narrative Magazine has posted a fine new issue, and the recipients of the 2006 Narrative Prize are Mermer Blakeslee for "Leenie," and Ned Parker for "On To Baghdad" and "After Saddam." Congratulations!

Out And About.

My wonderful and incessant new friend, Jack Pendarvis, has told the world through his explosive! new blog, that my favorite comic strip was Mary Worth. I think I might've confused Mary Worth with Brenda Starr, but it's too late to correct my mistake, and that I remembered following Mary Worth maybe speaks to my interest in other people's business, and my impending matron-liness. Wait! The Simpleton says she's "a gem of high modernity." That's why!

After you enjoy Jack's musings, you'll want to go and buy his smart, funny short story collection - The Mysterious Secret Of The Valuable Treasure.

My favorite donut: cake with confectioner's sugar that cools the inside of your mouth.

Lancaster.

Not only did the Amish representative forgive the family of the man - and the man - who killed the young girls, but he forgave them the day after the murders, before the girls were buried. Which makes me think that forgiveness is not something these people come to, but, rather, forgiveness is what they anticipate.
